Lower Back Sprains
A lower back sprain occurs when the ligaments in the lumbar spine are overstretched or torn, often due to sudden movement, heavy lifting, or trauma. These ligaments help stabilize the spine, and injury to them can cause sharp or dull pain, stiffness, and reduced mobility. Unlike strains, which affect muscles and tendons, sprains specifically involve the connective tissue that links bones together.
Symptoms can develop immediately or within a few hours after the injury and may worsen with movement. Rest, ice, compression, and elevation (RICE) are commonly recommended in the early stages. However, if the pain persists, it may require further evaluation to rule out disc involvement or other structural damage in the lumbar spine.
