Can bruxism (clenching or grinding of the teeth) become a lifelong problem?

Bruxism can become a lifelong problem if it’s not addressed or treated early. Some people may grind their teeth only during times of high stress, while others might do it continuously, even when they aren’t aware of it. If the underlying causes, like stress, anxiety, or sleep disorders, aren't managed, bruxism can persist for years or even a lifetime. Without treatment, it can lead to serious dental issues, such as worn-down teeth, tooth fractures, and even jaw disorders like temporomandibular joint (TMJ) problems.

However, with proper care and lifestyle changes, bruxism doesn’t have to be permanent. Stress management techniques, therapy, or using a mouthguard at night can help reduce or prevent grinding. Treating any underlying conditions, such as TMJ muscle spasms, TMJ muscle adhesions, misaligned TMJ (one or both sides) , irritated trigeminal nerve, sleep apnea or adjusting misaligned teeth, can also make a big difference. The key to preventing lifelong bruxism is recognizing it early and taking steps to address its causes.
