The Role of the Sternocleidomastoid in TMJ Disorders
While not a direct TMJ muscle, the sternocleidomastoid (SCM) affects jaw function through its influence on head posture. Poor posture can strain the TMJ, causing overactivity in the SCM. Trigger points in the SCM can refer pain to the jaw, temple, or even the back of the head. Addressing these referral patterns through postural correction and massage can reduce TMJ-related symptoms and improve overall comfort.
