The Soft Disc That Sits in the Middle

Inside each TMJ there is a small, soft pad made of tough tissue. People call it the articular disc. It sits right between the lower jaw bone and the skull bone.

The disc is thicker around the edges and thinner in the center. This shape helps it fit the curved bones perfectly. It keeps the bones from rubbing against each other.

When you open your mouth, the disc moves along with the jaw bone. It slides forward at the same time so everything stays lined up. Without this disc, the joint would not move as smoothly.

The disc also has a little fluid around it that acts like oil. This fluid helps the parts glide without sticking.
