The Strong Muscle That Helps You Bite Hard
One of the main muscles that closes your jaw is called the masseter. It sits on the side of your face, running from your cheekbone down to the bottom of your jaw. You can feel it if you clench your teeth.
This muscle is very strong for its size. When it tightens, it pulls the lower jaw up with a lot of force. That force is what lets you bite through tough food.
The masseter works with other muscles, but it does a big part of the heavy lifting. On average, a person’s bite can create over 100 pounds of pressure. Some people can bite even harder.
Because this muscle is so powerful, the joint has to be built tough enough to handle the pressure every time you chew.
