TMJ and Ear Pain – What’s the Connection?

Many people with TMJ disorders experience ear pain, even though their ears are perfectly healthy. This is because the temporomandibular joint is located close to the ear, and inflammation or tension in the joint can refer pain to the ear area.

This phenomenon is called referred pain, and it often leads to confusion about the source of the discomfort. Treating the underlying TMJ issue, such as through chiropractic care, physical therapy or bite adjustments, can help alleviate this ear pain without the need for direct ear treatment.
