Your Jaw Moves More Than You Think

Your jaw joints are busy almost all day long. You use them when you talk, chew, swallow, and even when you smile or make faces. Scientists say the TMJ is one of the most used joints in the whole body.

Just talking for a few minutes can mean hundreds of small jaw movements. Eating a meal adds even more. Yawning stretches the joint open wide. All of this happens without you thinking about it.

Most of the time your teeth are not even touching. They rest slightly apart. This gives the joint a break between the times it has to work hard.

By the end of a normal day, your TMJ has opened, closed, and shifted thousands of times. That is a lot of work for such a small joint.
